The Birth of a Business

The Barn was built in the 1920s and used as a traditional homestead barn for cows and hay/straw storage for many years. More recently, as the ownership of the farm changed hands, it was used simply for storage. As we turn it into J Starr's Flower Barn, the old building will slowly get a facelift and be filled with life again!

I FINALLY DID IT! I STARTED A FLOWER BUSINESS!! You could say I was born to be a florist. My mother worked at our cousin's flower shop when she was pregnant with me, actually having to call out of work to go to the hospital for my arrival.  When I wanted a job in high school, I went to work at that very same flower shop,  learning all the basics of design, decorating, & customer service. After college, I tried my hand at a few other "careers," but always seemed to find my way back to flowers. Fast forward over 10 years, and there I was, pregnant with my first child, working at the same shop on the day before I went into labor! Over the last few years as a stay-at-home mom, I have worked as fill-in/relief help at a number of florists in the area, just to help friends and to get my flower fix. When family, friends, and friends-of-friends have gotten married, I have gladly created their wedding floral arrangements. I've pretty much lost track of the number of times I've been asked why I don't have my own business...After my husband told me that I shouldn't keep taking over our family living spaces with wedding flowers, I thought I might be done with wedding flowers for awhile.  Then we bought a farm....with a 100 yr old barn...and I love antiques (and old barns) about as much as I love flowers. And J Starr's Flower Barn was born...
